The most famous poem ‘Aniara’ by Nobel Prize laureate Harry Martinson is a journey through space. Although his depictions of the Swedish natural environment and Swedish society are firmly anchored on Swedish soil, Martinson was also a world traveller and a stargazer.

Nobel Prize in Literature in 1913

Poetry that conveys the peace of the soul

On 13 November 1913 Rabindranath Tagore was announced as the first non-European literature laureate. Tagore dedicated his life to poetry, art and music, composing the Indian national anthem as well as the national anthem of Bangladesh. He started writing poetry at the age of 8. When he was awarded the Nobel Prize in Literature, he became the first non-European to be awarded a Nobel Prize.

Poetry that links the past with the present

The Polish poet Wislawa Szymborska has been described as a “Mozart of poetry”, her words falling into place with a veritable ease. She wrote around 400 poems during her lifetime, using common everyday images to reflect on larger truths about love, death and passing time. In 1996 she was awarded the Nobel Prize in Literature “for poetry that with ironic precision allows the historical and biological context to come to light in fragments of human reality.”

Vaccine development

The Nobel Prize in Physiology or Medicine 2023 was awarded jointly to Katalin Karikó and Drew Weissman “for their discoveries concerning nucleoside base modifications that enabled the development of effective mRNA vaccines against COVID-19.”

Physicist Herbert Kroemer passed away on 8 March 2024, age 95. He was awarded the 2000 Nobel Prize in Physics for developing semiconductor heterostructures used in high-speed- and opto-electronics.
